About the Apollo Challenge

High gas prices, war in the Middle East, hurricanes, and global warming have forced a new debate on the future of US energy policy. It remains to be seen, however, whether our leaders in Washington will chose more intensive exploitation of older, more polluting technologies or energy independence and good jobs based on newer, cleaner technologies.

Even if America's leaders choose the path of new, cleaner energy sources, only massive public pressure and bold leadership will ensure action that is fast and big enough to avert the worst impacts of global climate change and create 3 million good American jobs.

Apollo Challenge Objectives

Fundamentally, the Apollo Challenge aims to ensure that our nation makes ambitious investments in clean energy and efficiency that will allow America -- within 10 years -- to achieve energy independence, and create 3 million good jobs here at home.

Meeting the goals of the Apollo Challenge will make our nation more secure by breaking our dependence on unstable foreign oil regimes and by confronting global warming.

By November 2006, the Apollo Challenge seeks to

  • organize at least a quarter million Americans to support these objectives
  • empower these Americans to step into the leadership void once filled by President John F. Kennedy, when he challenged our nation to accomplish what seemed like the impossible -- send a man to the moon and return him safely to the earth in just ten years.
  • mobilize these citizen-leaders to challenge our elected officials in Washington to adopt the bold measures needed to achieve American energy independence.
